For Children
The best time to initiate orthodontic treatment depends on each individual’s orthodontic problem. Several orthodontic problems are best treated before all of the permanent teeth are in while other problems can best be resolved in adolescence and adulthood.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist at age 7. An early examination allows the board certified orthodontic specialist to determine if there is a problem (or a potential one) and how and when the problem should be treated. An orthodontic examination at age 7 does not always result in immediate treatment. After initial evaluation, most often, we simply want to check periodically while the permanent teeth erupt and the jaws and face continue to grow.
If, however, there is a problem, we may recommend interceptive treatment. These limited measures are used to guide tooth eruption and facial growth, thereby preventing more serious problems from developing. Early intervention frequently makes the completion of treatment at a later age easier and less time consuming.
